FAQ

We are asked a thousand and one different questions about what we do. Here are a few common ones.

What are your opening times?

Our Ballarat Workshop is located at:
Shed 1
20 Elizabeth Street
Delacombe, Victoria, Australia, 3356

And is currently open Fridays 10am-4pm and Saturdays 10am-4pm.

We have fitting stock for our boots at our Ballarat workshop as well as a range of apparel and accessories at this location too.

Do I need to make an appointment to visit your shop?

No. If you are just wanting to try on our boots or try on an apron or belt, no appointment is required but please note our opening hours.

Ballarat is open Fridays 10-4 and Saturdays 10-4.

I'm not sure what size I am, how do I work out what size I should order?

We have a Size Guide available here. This guides you through the process of taking some measurements to then compare to a Size Chart to understand the best size for your foot. Our Original Boots on this site are exchangeable, so if once you receive your boots and you find that they're the wrong size, we can exchange them for another pair. Please refer to our Returns Policy for more information.

Alternatively you can come into our flagship store and we will assist you to determine the best fit. Instead of using a tape measure to take dimensions of your foot, we use shoes or boots in our shop that we call 'fitting stock' that we have you try on in order to work out what your best size is. The boots on Wootten Goods come in a defined width, toe shape and size, so to test the fit, we've found the best way to work out what feels right (as we can't feel what you feel) is to have you try things on and walk around. This gives us an idea of how the style fits and works under dynamic wear, which is something we can't obtain with measurements.

For more difficult to fit feet we have a Heritage site and process that allows for more complex adjustments and fittings.

Do you do repairs?

We only do repairs to boots/accessories that we have made ourselves. Unfortunately we do not have the time or the room in our workshop to do other repairs. We would recommend the following repairers:

Hamid Zapatero (0467 512 305) at 260 Glenferrie Rd Malvern 3144

The Cobbler's Last in Melbourne CBD

Condellos at Barkly Square in Brunswick

Sturt Street Cobbler, 113 Sturt St, Ballarat Central

Town & Country Cobbler Shop in Waurn Ponds

On The Mend Shoe Repairs in Fitzroy

Do you make all your boots and leathergoods?

Yes. We actually make all of our leather goods. We make all of the footwear, bags, leather aprons and leather accessories out of our workshop in Ballarat. We also make boot and shoe laces!

How are your boots constructed?

Our boots are made from locally sourced bovine leather farmed and tanned in Australia. Our boots are fully leather lined. Their insoles, midsoles, heel counters and toe puffs are all veg-tan leather. We use a steel shank to support the arch. Our rubber soles are made locally in Adelaide, South Australia, from nitrile rubber. We employ McKay Welted construction (also known as Blake Rapid), which is distinctly different from Goodyear Welted boots (see the FAQ Materials & Construction for more information).

I live interstate or overseas, can I still order boots from you?

We have a Size Guide available here. This guides you through the process of taking some measurements to then compare to a Size Chart to understand the best size for your foot. Our Original Boots on this site are exchangeable, so if once you receive your boots and you find that they're the wrong size, we can exchange them for another pair. Please refer to our Returns Policy for more information.

I was told not to buy shoes online.

There are a few key factors to consider when buying shoes online. The fitting of the shoes is the most important thing.  We would always recommend coming into our store so that we can help you through the fitting of your new boots. If you can’t make it in and would like a pair then read through our fitting information closely.

Take measurements and consider also if you wear your shoes slightly loose or with a thick sock then you may want to go up half a size from the standard fitting.

Can I tweak part of the design of the boot? Have a different colour? Sole colour?

It sounds like you might be after our heritage Made-To-Order service, where you can specify/choose more of these options. Please visit our Heritage website to view all the options.

What's the difference between your Wootten Goods and your Wootten Heritage site?

Wootten has been handcrafting high quality boots and leathergoods in Australia for the best part of fifty years. Traditionally, our Heritage service is entirely Made-To-Order and requires face-to-face fittings with a customer. The purpose of the Wootten Goods site is to bring the same quality craftsmanship to a broader audience by making a more limited range of Ready To Wear boots and leathergoods available online and showcasing other high quality locally made products alongside our own.
